Co-implementation of conservation tillage and herbicides reduces weed and nematode infestation and enhances the productivity of direct-seeded rice in North-western Indo-Gangetic Plains

Direct-seeded rice (DSR) can be a resource-efficient alternative to puddled transplanted (PTR), but weeds and nematodes pose severe challenges. Conservation agriculture (CA)-based DSR may inhibit/influence weeds/nematodes, which further intensified by adopting better weed control. Hence, this experiment was undertaken. Five CA-based practices involving zero tillage, residue retention, brown manuring, superimposed with four control/herbicide options were compared PTR in split-plot design replicated three times. All DSRs encountered more plant parasitic (PPNs) than PTR. Root-knot (RKN) infested five among 14 present first time found Dinebra retroflexa . A till (ZT)DSR+ mungbean – ZT wheat + mungbean+wheat system reduced significantly. It RKN galls Echinochloa colona, crusgalli , plants 72, 58, 56%, respectively. In soil too, other PPNs, namely, Tylenchorhynchus brevilineatus Pratylenchus thornei 39%, 32%, 26%, respectively, gave 6.3–22.7% higher yield CA practice DSRs. Pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, cyhalofop-butyl, bispyribac-Na applied sequentially increased 176.1%, at below detectable levels soil, grains, straw, safe for rotational crops. The above ZT-based triple cropping supplemented herbicides through nematode control would an the North-wester Indo-Gangetic Plains of India similar agroecologies tropics/sub-tropics. This study help farmers policymakers integrated management modules using crop residue, herbicides/pesticides income.
